Do some ethnic groups experience more challenges at work?

On Behalf of | Feb 1, 2024 | employment law |

When at work, all employees have the right to do their jobs without fear of mistreatment, the threat of harm and other issues that can lead to the development of a hostile work environment. While any North Carolina employee could experience harassment or discrimination in the workplace, some may have a higher chance of experiencing these things. There is evidence that some minority groups may face more harassing behavior at work, including in academic medicine.

Working in predominantly white spaces

Statistics indicate that minority ethnic communities are almost twice as likely to experience sexual harassment in the field of academic medicine. Many of these individuals already face challenges if they are working in predominantly white spaces, and speaking out about sexual harassment may seem impossible. As a result, victims often remain silent to avoid potential repercussions.

There is also evidence to suggest that minorities are also more likely to experience uncivil behavior in online spaces as well. While minority ethnic groups face challenges, LGBTQ+ groups also report experiencing harassment at higher rates than other groups. Any individual who experiences harassment or discrimination in professional settings does not have to remain silent.

Defending the rights of the victims

Any individual who has experienced this type of treatment at work can speak out. There are options for recourse available, including filing a civil claim. As it can be difficult to seek justice and fight for compensation alone, it is helpful to work with an experienced North Carolina attorney to determine the specific legal options available.
