Sexual harassment: How to recognize and respond

On Behalf of | Aug 16, 2024 | employment law |

Even with numerous laws, regulations, warnings and communication in place, sexual harassment is still commonplace in many industries. If you experience this type of workplace mistreatment, it is important to remember some tips.

Recognize: Don’t second-guess yourself

Trust your instincts. Many victims of sexual harassment fell into dangerous situations because they doubted their initial feelings and reactions. Sexual predators can be anyone at work. They also know how to manipulate others, so recognizing signs can help mitigate the situation and prevent it from happening.

Quid pro quo harassment happens when a manager or supervisor asks for a sexual favor in exchange for job benefits like promotions or raises then threatens to punish or fire you if you refuse. Workplace harassment might also occur when you are uncomfortable due to belittling jokes, sexual images or threats.

You should recognize any situation you perceive as uncomfortable and demeaning towards you or any other staff member.

Respond: Ways to deal with sexual harassment

There are two ways to deal with sexual harassment. Both aim to discourage any intention and keep you safe in the workplace.

  • Tell them that you’re offended: Make the person understand the situation. Assert yourself and inform the offender that you don’t take too kindly to their actions. This first step could act as a buffer towards any more severe action if the person had no intention of offending you.
  • Check the company policy on sexual harassment: Review the policy and identify the rule that was violated. Approach HR and inform them of your situation. If there is no human resource representative where you work, report the incident to your immediate supervisor. If you are being harassed by your immediate supervisor, report to their senior instead.

Even though taking initial action may be stressful, you can empower yourself through information, and take comfort in knowing that the law protects you.
